If you downloaded the first five you can that the songs found on D RnR volumes 6, 7, and half of 8 were all on those previous volumes. From the little I know of the series it seems that those first five volumes where from CD issues of the series. Kind of the same way Back From The Grave was compiled onto Cds. These volumes (6-10) are strictly from the the Vinyl releases, which all had about 20 tracks.

Gravel Volume 2 continues in the series of rare and ultra obscure garage rock from the 1960s with more unreleased acetates, more hard to find sides and more regional garage rock (from locales like Florida and New York) that have been compiled on other garage rock comps that have since no doubt gone out of print.

There are some true obscurities here that even garage rock collectors may not have heard but obscurities which aren't just being collected for rarities sake. Both the garage rock collector and the garage rock novice should really give these a listen for those few songs which they really need to have in their collection.

This collection on Kumquat May Records, like Volume 1 in this series, is limited to only 500 copies, and while it again is hard to figure out what is rare and what has been compiled before due to the lack of any liner notes, it can be said that most garage comps of this nature give even less information that the Gravel series. Gravel Volume 1 is the first in what hopefully will be a series of rare and ultra obscure garage rock from the 1960s. The series starts out strong, thanks to a fine mix of unreleased acetates, some hard to find sides and a handful of regional garage rock (from locales like Texas and PA) that have been compiled on other garage rock comps.

There's no doubt that Kumquat May Records decided to put together this series (limited to only 500 copies) based around the 5 unreleased alternate versions and acetates and a few of the astounding uncompiled tracks which are the main reason to get this compilation because they are fantastic. It helps to have a slew of other great garage rock to go along with those rarities. I only wish the compilation came with liner notes to help understand just how great the music is here.

There's nothing quite as exciting as finding unreleased acetates - and when those acetates contain fiery, pounding garage rock it's even better. The 5 unreleased acetates found on Gravel Volume 1 include Yesterday We Laughed (an alternate version) by The Cirkit, And You Believe Me by The Fabulous Courdels, I Want You by The Thorns, Gonna Find A Way by The Jagged Edge, and an alternate version of Baby As Time Goes By by The Moon-Dawgs. And all five of these songs are incredible with only The Fabulous Courdels being a little less than fab.

The original version of The Cirkit's (from Indiana) Yesterday We Laughed was originally released on the Unicorn label and has been compiled on the Quagmire Vol 2 compilation, but Gravel Volume 1 starts out with an incredible, rocking alternate that sounds like the drums are battling it out with the singer and that is worth the price of the entire compilation. There's ripping guitars, scorching vocals, and shaking rattling drums to accompany the whole thing and it just totally rocks.

Another unreleased tune is the fuzzed out rocker called I Want You by The Thorns which has an incredible harmony backing vocal, fuzz guitar and a raunchy lead vocal which is quite close to plea-perfection.

The Jagged Edge's Gonna Find A Way is an upbeat unreleased tune that sounds like The Pretty Things with harmonica and organ battling it out as the vocalist looks for a way out. You won't find better rhythm guitar than this track.

The original version of The Moon-Dawgs' (from New Orleans) Baby As Time Goes By was originally the b-side to You're No Good on the Bofuz label in 1966 and can be found on Highs In The Mid Sixties #13: Texas Part Three - but here we get an organ drenched alternate version which is incredible.

My least favorite unreleased track is called And You Believe Me by The Fabulous Courdels which just has some off key vocals - other than that the scream before the instrumental break and the rhythm is really sweet.

A truly amazing obscurity which has never been compiled and is highly sought after is Houston, Texas' own Thursday's Children - whose Dominoes was originally the b-side to their Air Conditioned Man released on the International Artists label (the same label for the Thirteenth Floor Elevators). This sounds like a garage pop tune that could've been created with the Bosstown sound thanks to its grooving guitar riff, faltering rhythm, handclaps and harmony vocals. Sadly, Jan Pedersen, the lead guitarist and lead vocalist of Thursday's Children, died in 2003 in a freak windsurfing accident, and Texas lost one of its unsung garage rock pioneers. Born in the early 80's they were one of the most important bands of Brithish rock'n'roll sound, even one of the best british bands. They are one of the first bands who made a sound nowdays we called psychobilly. Their sound mixed rock'n'roll and garage and that make it really savage. Founded in Crouch End (north of UK) they were sticking and alive from 1981 to 1987 touring all along Europe. The members of the band changed in those years but the spirit and writer of almost all the songs was Alec Palao.

"Dinosaurs", their debut album, caught the Stingrays crossing a bridge most other bands would have fallen off, poised between styles that would take them a while to reconcile.

As the time passes the Stingrays changed and their sound turned less savage(you will notice it if you hear their last album). At the end of the life of the band Alec played with the Go-Betweens and the Pogues, getting turned on to folk rock. In 1988 when the band was already disolved an ex-member , Charity Case , created a band called Minux and Alec finished playing in The Sneetches, a band whose sound remember the 60's. From the other members of the band we don't know anything.

Two decades before the Donnas were doing their best to be the "chick Ramones," we had Nikki and the Corvettes, who, besides cranking out some wonderfully catchy pop tunes, had a front woman who was surely many a punk boy's wetdream. Bomp has reissued on CD the band's sole album -- think of a sexed-up punked-up Shangri-Las, fueled by Chuck Berry guitar riffs -- along with their two singles. You get 16 foot-tappin', head-boppin' songs about boys, "Backsteat Love," and dancing that I think would require a supreme effort to NOT enjoy. Bubblegum punk that tastes as good as it looks. Nikki & The Corvettes - S/T

Almost as well-known for its cover (the three Slits are half-naked and covered in mud) as for its music, Cut is an ebullient piece of post-punk mastery that finds the Slits' interest in Caribbean and African rhythms smoothly incorporated into their harsher punk rock stylings. Ari Up's wandering voice (a touch like Yoko Ono) might be initially off-putting, but not so much so that it makes listening to the record difficult. Six tracks are revamped from earlier Peel Sessions and sound better for the extra effort (especially "New Town" and "Love and Romance"). With its goofy charm, gleeful swing and sway, and subtle yet compelling libertarian feminism, this is one of the best records of the era.-(AMG)

The Slits - Cut

Mo Dettes' founder Kate Korus was a one-time member of The Raincoats and The Slits, so it makes sense that the Mo Dettes' sound falls in between those two groups. Korus' Swiss-accented vocals establish a (tenuous) connection with Kleenex, the remaining third of the era's all-female post-punk trinity. The Mo Dettes' angular post-punk doesn't teeter on the verge of chaos like the early Raincoats, though; it is tempered with a melodic flair that anticipates the C-86 style of bands such as Carg Carroll's Miaow, while not indulging the Slits reggae fusion, though the spirit of dub might have informed Jane Crockford's nimble bass playing and June Miles-Kingston 's busy drumming style. The Story So Far, the group's only album, contains a remake of their debut single, "White Mouse," retitled "White Mouse Disco"; covers of the Rolling Stones ("Paint It Black") and Edith Piaf ("Milord"), and mildly divergent cuts such as the jazzy "Kray Twins." Echoes of the Mo Dettes and their post-punk sisters can be heard in new groups such as the Vivian Girls and Liechtenstein. (AMG)

Time Bomb High School is much more than another garage tribute to soulful '60s Brit-rock. But the sophomore effort from the Reigning Sound is something less than the band's minimal, country-folk debut. During knockouts like the Rolling Stones-flavored "Straight Shooter" and "I'd Much Rather Be With the Boys," Greg Cartwright and his Memphis combo's sound is as pure, and as well-grounded, as anything since Exile on Main Street. With 14 tracks, however, the material and arrangements are spread just a little too thin, and too many average tunes are allowed in the mix. A bit of a stylistic return for former Oblivians member Cartwright, Time Bomb High School crackles with raucous garage energy. While nothing like the punk/soul primal scream of the musician/songwriter's earlier days, this disc surpasses any reasonable swagger quota. The Reigning Sound's moody, countrified debut had a relative wealth of riveting numbers, and more conceptual clarity, but this 2002 In The Red title will definitely satisfy Cartwright fans as well as listeners wary of the inevitable post-White Stripes garage posers. - AllMusic

One of the millions of awesome bands to come out of Detroit. Often overlooked this band has released some of the best powerpop/punk from Detroit. Don't be fooled when KBD says this album only house 3 good songs, I asure you there are plenty of killer tracks on this album. Their track, Don't Come Cryin to Me, along is worth the DL.

You could argue that Detroit was a place where '77 punk never really needed to happen, since it -or something just as loud- had been there all along. The important distinction between Detroit bands and "regular" punk -dating back to James Williamson, Dick Wagner and beyond- is that the songs are all, fundamentally, about GUITAR. Great front-men? Sure. But how do you know it's Detroit? The riffs. Eskorbuto (translation:Scurvy), lived fast and died faster. The band was made up by Jualma Suarez (bass and vocals), Iosu Exposito(guitar, vocals) and Paco Galan (drums) in 1980. Jualma and Iosu both dies of overdoses 6 months apart. They gained recognition in the basque punk circles in the early 80’s thanks to their devastating gigs. Their music was highly inspirational, themes of aggression, dark humor, death and politics were often part of their music.

The Spaceshits - Misbehavin'

Led by Jay Jay (aka Jay Retard) and Alicja Trout (Clears, River City Tanlines), Memphis' Lost Sounds are a glorious mess of punk rock artsiness gone awry in all the right places. Their 2004 In the Red effort, simply titled Lost Sounds, is a punk rock dance party guaranteed to merrily demolish every piece of furniture in the room. But this paranoid rampage is a far cry from the faux-sexy bass'n'drum din pumped out by the likes of Death from Above 1979. "Those things they put inside me/ You know they make me nervous," wails Jay through a cacophonous din of twitchy surf guitars and stuttering keyboards. Elsewhere the band declares that the end of the world is, "worth a laugh." And you get the feeling they mean it.
With a pedigree that includes some of the most raucous noise outfits to emerge from the Memphis scene, the Lost Sounds avoid the traps of by-the-numbers punk or southern-flavored garage rock and instead offer up a sound that is more akin to savage disco. That being said, their adventurous sonic attack is bold and sometimes abrasive. Ample melodies are buried in the din for anyone brave enough to sift through the noise to find them. A danceable disaster, the band's chaotic post-apocalyptic new wave sound explodes from the speakers with a fuzzed-out fury that borders on collapse. Hard to categorize, the sound is something akin to Devo, Liars, Rocket from the Tombs, and the Pixies duking it out to decide who's crazier. Obnoxiously fun, the band is a likely bit of an acquired taste for most. -AllMusic

Vintage New York punk band 1977-1978. Played with Squeeze, Dead Boys, The Cramps, The Crass. First 7-inch released in October 1977. Played in the New York metropolitan area at Max's Kansas City, The Showplace in Dover, New Jersey, and even made an appearance at CBGB's. Their song "Stitches in my Head' has been covered by Urge Overkill, The Bill Bondsmen, The Anal Babes, and Seattle favorites The RC5. Their song "Dead Heat on a Merry Go Round" was covered by legendary punk band The Defex. Reviewed in Zig Zag, Bomp, Ugly Things, Maximum Rock and Roll. Power pop got off to a rocketing start in the '70s and the demand for it, like most genres and styles, dissipated slowly through the '80s. Like most movements, there are some records and bands that were left in the resin, never to be fully acknowledged for their contributions, whether small or significant. Standing in the shadows of other bands from Max's and CBGB's, Milk 'n' Cookies quietly carved their niche on the circuit, but never received their due from mainstream culture. Their eponymous debut is a session hyped up on the sweetest sugar and soda pop, as the group carves out three-minute numbers that are post-glam but foreshadow the emergence of punk. For die-hard collectors of power pop, this album is a welcome treat to even the most seasoned and jaded of ears. And for those hyped up on the modern-day, cookie-cutter, Johnny-come-lately band of the moment emulating the sound of new wave? Well seems like two years ago today I started this blog so I suppose I should celebrate with a post.... Yea its true I haven't posted anything all year I don't know I've just gotten lazy when it comes to these sort of thing. Since I'll be having a lot of free time this summer maybe I'll do more than one post every 6 months. It seems there's several blogs of which I used to follow back in the day that are no longer active.. Chocoreve, O Canadarm, In The Crowd, Lost In Tyme, etc. Hopefully I'll be able to maintain this blog for a long time to come..

First off The Gravedigger V, a 80s garage revival band from San Diego, CA. They do some of my favorite covers of 60s classics such as Hate (The Stoics), Searching (The Omens), Stop It Baby (The Heard), Night of the Phantom (Larry & The Blue Notes) and some others.

The Gravedigger 5 - All Black And Hairy/The Mirror Cracked

If a band ever deserved to be on a label named In the Red, it would be Black Time. They smack listeners upside the head with almost ridiculous amounts of distortion and cave-dwelling reverb -- so much so that it can take a while to get to the snotty, witty garage-punk hiding with the din. It would be easy to accuse a band with such a noisy yet stark sound of repeating itself on each album, but that's not the case: Blackout was more or less straight-up garage-blues-punk, albeit put through a sonic shredder; Midnight World ratcheted the noise up even further and added some art damage; and Double Negative is artfully crude, lightening up on the skronk just enough to let other sounds (and even melodies!) peek through. This might be Black Time's most clearly recorded album, but it's still incredibly harsh, with onslaughts like "Problems" and the fittingly deranged "Institution" proving the band's devotion to distortion. They continue to crank out pissed-off songs in the shape of Detroit garage-punk from the '60s to the 2000s -- there's more than a touch of Stooges howl in "The Days Are Too Long and the Nights Are Too Short," while "Little Death" and "Hostile Cosmos" recall newer acts like the Clone Defects just as Blackout and Midnight World did, but with more focus and energy. As good as they are at reanimating the sounds of their influences, Black Time and Double Negative are at their most exciting when they dive into stranger realms, wielding noise and feedback like Jack the Ripper's knife. With its rave-ups and eerie coda, "When the Clock Strikes Twelve" is as gleefully sinister and anarchistic as anything Screaming Lord Sutch recorded, and carries on that veddy British tradition of spooky garage rock. The brief instrumentals "Lunar Rhythm" and "Lunar Eclipse" nod to bouncy '60s sci-fi kitsch, but the album gets truly eclectic with the rockabilly-tinged ballad "Repulsion" and "Skeleton Factory," which, with its choppy beat and buzzy synths, does sound like something that could rip the flesh off of bones. However, the oddest, and possibly best, song is "I'm Gonna Haunt You When I'm Gone," a lone bright, sweet spot of ghostly indie pop among the rest of the album's pitch-black noise. This is easily some of the band's most varied and most listenable music, but as relatively polished and wide-ranging as Double Negative can be, Black Time never forget to be loud -- their amps always go up to 12 (or is that midnight?). - AMG

Kick ass band from New Jersey, one of the best albums I've heard of 2009.
It would make more sense if a majority of the members of Screaming Females were women, but this isn't the case. But the misnomer is quickly abandoned when commanding guitarist, vocalist and sole female of the group, Marissa Paternoster, engages the listener with the wild introductory track, "Bell,” which is the finest track on the record due to dirty, driving grungy guitar parts and Paternoster’s vocals that range from an imposing Joan Jett-esque style to the shriek of a red-tailed hawk. "Skull" demonstrates a bluesy rock vibe with a serious edge and vocals that are comparable to the trademark howls of Grace Slick. Power Move is not an album to be underestimated. One of my new years resolution is to post more music. Here's my first of what I hope will be many more.

First up is an Arf!Arf! Cd sampler entitled Garageaholic, Psychedelic, Outsider Music. Includes a bunch a music for all you garageaholics out there from fuzzed out tracks like Blue Music Box by The Changin Tymes, to moody classics such as Without You by The Kings Ransom. The last 6 tracks of the comp will have you thinking wtf. The outsider portion of the sampler includes the strange sounds of James "Rebel" O'Leary , look up his music videos to get a real sense of this guy. The comp concludes with a power pop track by Route 28.

I decided to start of with possibly the best one of all Los Saicos, we all know they're story well maybe. 1964 a bunch of guys start a band called Los Sadicos (The Sadists). However their name would often go censored, they deleted the D and went with the English pronunciation of psychos thus creating Los Saicos. They created the wildest most raw lo-fi garage rock of their time, only comparable to bands like The Sonics. However they were located all the way in Peru far from the garage rock and surf of the states or the British rock sounds of the time. They released but six singles and they they were gone.

I bring you a bunch of stuff hopefully something new for you in the batch.

First up the Jacuzzi Boys. Theyre currently touring with KK & BBQ and are making a stop here in Philly. Too bad I wont be able to go. Sucks. Finally R5 puts together a great show lineup and Ill be missing it.

Dreamy, brooding garage rock from Florida, casting their lot with roughly tuneless vocals but bringing "Island Ave." up on some early Echo & the Bunnymen shit, aware of how hard they can rock but keeping things breezy and direct instead. Only "You Should Know" steps it up a bit, but I like these guys when they're going slower – they seem to have a really good handle on how they want to sound, and it's a welcome model to have around, youthful and cool. - Dusted Mag

Well its been over 2 months since ive uploaded anything to the blog. Blame it on lack of comments on the posts, on gyro1966 and his imense collection of garage comps being placed up at TWILIGHTZONE! (Im still several months behind on those), but most of all blame it on laziness. Anyways here are three great bands you guys should check out. Ill try to continue and update as much as possible.

Its great that after several years of great this band final release an offical LP. While they cleaned up their sound a bit for this album there garage-pop trashiness is still evident in all the tracks.

The Okmoniks - Party Fever!!!

This band name has been mentioned on nearly every indie and garage blog, magazine, and website. After watching them live I can see why.

Another great band; Black Time. I had no idea this band existed until a few weeks ago. I got to see them live and I can tell you that Ive been missing out. They opened up for Vivian Girls, but they could have easily been the headliners. If anything they held back because of it. Keep an eye for their new album Double Negative

I too have not posted in quite some time, blame it on the weather! Not listening to loads of music these days, either, but I've finally found something to obsess over besides The Kills/Cheap Time.. (and Grand Ole Party).. TINY MASTERS OF TODAY!
The mini band consists of brother and sister Ivan and Ada, ages fourteen and twelve. Songs are pleasantly gritty and reminiscent of simple punk, sometimes garage songs, "Tooty Frooty" a definite signature piece for such a tribute. The supertiny duo has managed to garner tons of friends in their extremely short career-- Russell Simins of Jon Spencer Blues Explosion has played for the band and also lends drums to the band's debut Bang Bang Boom Cake. Other collaborations involve Kimya Dawson of The Moldy Peaches, Fred Schieder of The B-52's, Angelo Spencer, DJ Atsushi Numata, Gibby Haynes of Butthole Surfers, as well as Karen O and Nick Zinner of Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Karen O also directed the music video for their new single "Hologram World"

A highly recommended band for any one into garage, powerpop, indie... doesnt matter really, just listen to it.

Upon first listen to Cheap Time’s self-titled debut on In the Red, one could be forgiven for thinking it nothing more than a good, albeit fairly ordinary garage punk record. It’s young, loud and snotty; it’s hook-filled and succinct. You get the idea. Don’t be hasty though: not only does Cheap Time pay dividends in terms of basic enjoyment with each listen, main man Jeff Novak’s skills as a songwriter and his obvious love of underground punk shine through as well.

Employing a stripped-down lineup and working within the inherently limited genre that is garage punk, Novak is still able to come up with a markedly diverse and varied set. The songs on Cheap Time run between just over a minute to just under two and a half, with finale “Trip to the Zoo” coming in at a baroque three-minutes plus. Yet everything from power pop and twee to art rock and glam can be heard (sometimes in the course of one song). Cheap Time is all over the map, while still remaining a totally fun and cohesive album.

....This is a rock record first and foremost, so just remember to play the fucker loud. The rest is all there if you want it. - Dusted Mag

Ive been pretty busy lately so havent had to much time for the blog. School lets out soon so expect a lot more in about a month or so. Well Ill leave you guys with this for now.

This Chicago-based quintet clearly believes in the notion that "old punk is best punk," and for a bunch of young whippersnappers, they roar through a set of tunes in the 1977 manner with as much snot, firepower, and élan as you could hope for. The Busy Signals are a long, long way from reinventing the wheel on their self-titled debut, but they know how rock & roll works and lay it out with skill and confidence. Lead singer Analucia (no last names for this bunch) shows a healthy portion of Chrissie Hynde-style attitude and equally impressive vocal chops, while Kevin and Eric both deliver top-shelf guitar firepower without getting in one another's path. The rhythm section keeps things fast and lean (the album zips by in less than 24 minutes) and drives these tunes like the proverbial Airmobile; "Matter of Time," "Plastic Girl," or "Stereo" would have sounded pretty swell on any random Sire Records LP released between 1977 and 1979. Blast from the past? Not quite, but The Busy Signals sure get the first part of that equation right. - amg

Ever tire of listening to your roommates or neighbors playing crappy indie punk and classic rock junk, well I got the perfect record for you and them........

If ever there was an album that ought to have "Light Fuse, Run Away" printed on the label, it's We Told You Not to Cross Us, the debut long-player from Columbia, MO's the Revelators. A power trio with better things to do than look for a bass player, hard-wailing vocalist Jeremiah, guitar mangler Schooley, and drum punisher Mark come roaring out of the box with "Ain't Got a Thing," a raging slice of blues-punk that sounds like an unholy cross between Howlin' Wolf and Black Flag, and the album never lets up for the next half hour. If the band occasionally downshifts into lower gear, it's usually a matter of going from 110 mph to 95 (like on the swaggering "Just Fine" or the ill-tempered "Ain't That Hatin' You Baby"), and on the album's one bona fide slow song, "Hillbilly Wolf," the boys show that they can reign themselves in without losing a drop of their intensity. But while these guys run fast and hit hard enough to impress the most jaded punk purist, the deep blues and country influences of their Southern heritage are never far from the forefront, and while "These Callused Hands" never got them a gig at Farm Aid, as an anthem for the independent farmer I'll take it over anything John Mellencamp ever put on plastic (The Revelators are the only punk band I know of who scheduled their tours around the planting and harvesting seasons on their family's farms — really!). We Told You Not to Cross Us makes it clear the Revelators are that rare example of a "roots rock" band whose roots run deep and whose rock is hard, fast, and frantic. Hear it and be amazed. - AMG

"Johnny Foreigner hails from Birmingham, England, where the trio first honed its blend of noisy co-ed vocals and rambunctious, syncopated chord structures in 2005. The following year saw the release of the band's first single, "Sometimes, In The Bullring"/"Camp Kelly Calm," which sold out in two months and received airplay from BBC Radio, London Live, and XFM. Johnny Foreigner had garnered enough attention by 2007 to ink a contract with Best Before Records, and bandmates Alexei, Junior, and Kelly retired to London to record the Arcs Across the City EP. A full-length album was recorded in New York later that year, with the 7" single "Our Bipolar Friends" being issued in March 2008 to drum up support for the record's upcoming release." -AMG

Grabbed this off a friend from the UK, it probably would have been a long time since I would recognize them myself, or maybe having heard the single first, have been completely turned off. "Our Bipolar Friends" which is not on this ep, and which has also since been dulled down a bit and not nearly as great sounding as the original track i linked (wma format, fyi). Hopefully they don't continue to decline, because they energy of this band is fantastic, and if they do, let this post hold posterity (haha). "Our Bipolar Friends" sounds like BARR joined Matt and Kim, without the sillyness. Expect rhythm and speed.

The Ordinary Boys- Maybe Someday CD Single

I found this while cleaning out my iTunes, and felt I needed to accompany the post. I remember buying this as a used CD at Tower Records I believe, sometime before their shut down. Also from England, The Ordinary boys debuted with this single, kinda post-punk, bit more pop. I sort of have this knack for picking out random CDs and enjoying them a whole lot... but that's another story. The Ordinary Boys apparently peaked in 2004, and no one knows what's happened since.

Hey guys, I haven't posted anything in a while, too busy sorting through the crap-pile of 2008 music releases thus far (although R.E.M. did leak today)...but after listening to Midnight Boom, new album from The Kills for maybe the one hundred and twenty first time, and reading a recent interview with the band in Nylon magazine, I can say I still have faith in 2008.

Let me just say that this is the first album I have ever listened to from the Kills, but I am DYING to hear more. To brief the interview and to explain why this band that started out with major White Stripes comparisons to producing something like this-- Jamie Hince and Alison Mosshart travelled to Mexico and everywhere else under the sun to collect thoughts for lyrics, each coming up with their own ideas: Jamie's riddled with hip-hop beats and Alison working with an acoustic guitar and four track. The mash-up is fantastic, and a lot of the tracks still maintain a pretty original rock sound, an album that "...sounds like 2008" says Mosshart. My favorite track is probably "Tape Song", I hope everyone loves this as much as I do.

I completly missed out on this record in 2007, I hadn't even heard of the Coconut Coolouts until a few weeks ago when I heard their song on the garagepunk podcast, Killed by Porn. I'd definitely put this up there with the best of '07.
Couldn't find a review that best suited them. So don't let the comparison to The B-52s fool you, these guys rock.

Blasting out party punk with dancey elements is always a difficult trick. Do it right, and you’ve got the best garage band ever (at least that’s what your friends will say). Do it wrong, and the album is straight to the closeout bin. Basically, you’re either somewhere in the vein of the Cramps or B-52s , or you’re the Vines. Coconut Coolouts seem to worship at the feet of Fred Schneider and Lux Interior. The guitar awesomness and title of “32 Wives” seems to cast a glance the way of “52 Girls,” while “(Please Don’t Break Me Out Of) Party Jail” and it’s “I never thought that I’d have fun behind bars” intro is pure camp that either Fred or Lux would die for.

We’re doing all right with Party Time Machine, which is (as the title suggests) a party time record. When you throw your party, putting on a record such as this is priority one after stocking the tiki bar and getting the torches lit. It’s disposable, but worth listening to while you get hammered on rum drinks and witty banter. Big dumb fun with ’60s organ doesn’t come around all that often in a categorically cool fashion, so it’s nice to hear a record that - while not exactly plumbing the depths of the human psyche - manages to be more than just three chords and a scream.(Rock Star Journalist)

One of the best Pennsylvania garage bands, in fact one of the best ever.

Formed in McKeesport, PA, a small town near Pittsburgh, the Swamp Rats released a handful of garage rock singles in 1966-1967 that got some local airplay and sales, but never broke out into national visibility. At their most scorching, those singles were in some ways a little ahead of their time, linking the fury of mid-'60s garage rock with the heavier, fuzzier, more over the top and crazed pre-metal rock of late-'60s bands like the MC5 and the Stooges. Their attack was dense and almost bludgeoning, paced by some particularly bulging-eyed, throat-rending scream-singing, usually with Bob Hocko on lead vocals. Although they were skilled at imbuing garage band standards like "Louie Louie" and "Hey Joe" with individual stamps, a big part of their failure to make a larger impact was likely their shortage of original material, with covers comprising most of the songs they recorded. At least most of those covers were hardly run of the mill in either selection or execution, particularly an overhaul of "Psycho" that might have been even more intense than the Sonics' original, though they did occasionally tone down for quieter stuff, as on their version of the Beatles' "Here, There and Everywhere." - (AMG)

One of the oddest records to emerge from the early 80s American DIY musical phenomenon has got to be the 7" single by Omaha, Nebraska's Better Beatles. Their bizarre versions of "Penny Lane" and "I'm Down" seem to have come crawling out of the Twilight Zone of recorded music's endless possibilities during the golden age of home recording.
With one of the most myopic band 'visions' ever done without a joke at the center of it, The Better Beatles had the balls to disassemble the lofty songwriting of the seemingly untouchable Beatles, albeit in one of the most atonal and melodically regressive ways conceivable, not counting the Residents. Aside from the genuinely disinterested female vocal delivery and almost No-Wave deadpan lyrics recited over the mind-numbing non-Beatles synthesizer and drum backtrack, their music is an entirely different beast that's destined to either immediately draw you in, or alienate you altogether. Personally, I've never been a huge fan of the 'Fab Four' any more than the casual song here or there that hasn't been played to death on classic rock radio, but the Better Beatles' take on the formula works surprisingly well, and still seems interesting even twenty seven years after its ungodly conception. For a band that only really existed for about 12 weeks, the future of the Better Beatles wasn't really expected to be long or even slightly bright, and with a limited amount of potential song material, it all culminated like a quick blast of good times with no real careerist-type expectations to get in the way of the fun. The music itself rubs up against the obnoxiously circus-soaked sound of Geza X, combined with subdued minimal noises from a more sedated Atari 2600 video game selection. The extra session tracks like "Hello Goodbye" are so deranged and head-turning, that it's unmistakably unique, and most definitely worth your time to check out. (Todd Killings - Victim of Time)

Though there already IS a double-vinyl comp on the Australian Corduroy label, released three years ago, in an attempt to keep up with the times (which The Thanes ARE capable of, as proven with last years "Downbeat & folked up album) a shiny little, CD retrospective was tooooooo long overdue! Now this is an essential purchase, either if you?re among the ones, who got cought up in the band's web of fuzz'n'jangle after the mentioned latest release, or if you're a long time fan, longing for a portable, pocket-sized thing, that you can easily carry on your Thanesounds-spreading mission. Anyway, if you're a fan of any of the musical aspects of the mid sixties, there's no way you won't find something for you here. If it's melodic beat pop that you're after, try the jangly Farfi-sized moods of "Before I go", "Wonder if …", inspired by wonder Who, "Gone away girl","Days go slowly by", "Girls" or "Please don't go", where I'm not really sure if it's just the title that it has in common with The Eyes tune. Similar description goes to the equally jangly, but slightly folkier sounds of the-hit-that-could've-been "World of stone", "Lost and found or "Hey girl (Look what you've done)", there's also some Diddley-ridden pop of "I?ll rest", thrown in for the good measure and even some pure back-to-basics 'Stoned r'n'b of "She's a robber". Another one of The Thanes usual sides is the snotty Dutch-inspired freakbeat, like heard in "Antenna susprise", "Static", "Lazy bones", "That's the story of our life" or one of the highlights, "It can never be".
A perfect way to "evolve your CD collection with the Rev-Ola-utionary release by Scotland's No.2 band. - Popism

Make that Scotland's number 1 band. I was fortunate enough to see them at last years Cavestomp and they really blew me away.

"Imagine the heaviest, most fuzzed out garage rock you've ever heard, now take that and run it through a handful of distortion pedals, a bank of Acid Mothers worthy FX, blast it through a wall of busted old Vox amps, wrap the whole thing in feedback and reverb, and suddenly you're in some alien alternate future where the world is populated exclusively by Japanese noiserock beatniks, who are constantly blasting fuzzed out walls of overblown sixties sounds from their low flying spacecraft...

Imagine if Merzbow remixed your favorite Fuzztones record, or the Stooges released records on PSF and were augmented by some insane drug addled organist with WAY too many amps. Philadelphia natives, The Low Budgets, are goofy as hell (if you've seen the short film starring them you know what I mean), and they don't give a shit... actually that can really just be attributed to coming from Philadelphia, haha. Led by the lead singer of The Dead Milkmen, the band churns out quirked punk rock anthems that remain catchy regardless of the crazy lyrics. It's a treat.

This album got really blogged-out, but I am mentioning it yet again because it really is that awesome. If you can't get behind any other track on the album, "Every Single Line Means Something" probably stands out for me as a top ten single for the year, most definitely. Clearly influenced by Hella, Marnie Stern's impressive instrumentals and feminine chiming, soaring yelps, and sometimes appropriate monotone, all layered in a very exact formula with each track, have almost a futuristic nature about them. The experimental nature of this album casts the future of music as bouncing drums, just "as your breath catches up from where you began". Let's not forget mind-numbing guitar soloing.

Probably the most 'indie' selection I made in this set, and granted The Rakes most certainly dove to a slightly softer sound, the foundation constructed with Capture and Realease still remains-- the friendly guitar and drum pairing, the drum still playing upbeat and catchy rhythyms, reminiscent still of old songs like "Retreat" or "We Are All Animals", the guitar, however, creating the slow and romantic new theme they've set for themselves. They give up on the romance for a bit in a couple tracks, and ended up either having tracks that either could have been intended for the last album, or just created tracks going back to where they started with "Trouble" and "Suspicious Eyes". Either way, I'll have them, power drums or heartstrings pulling.

I don't really think The Willowz are ever gonna get the following they deserve. At the very least, here on the East coast, which would be their fault anyway for not touring here and being so impartial to their West coast homeland. In any case, they're a very good band, and with their sixth album stretch their legs and remove the garage punk element instilling more rock'n'roll fervor, will a bit of extra roll. They went a lil more blues and country than they have in the past, which is a transformation I would totally expect from a band, in terms of creative evolution, in their sixth album, and not feel cheeated at all. I won't say I don't miss the garage punk Willowz, and they haven't made so many strokes I can't see the underlying picture ("Nobody" sounds a bit more Talk in Circles). Once again, I am embracing change. This is refreshing, haha. I'll be sure to post about this band again sometime soon.

Modey Lemon

I was reminded of this Pittsburgh band while listening to the Lord Grunge (of Grand Buffet) podcast I got off of itunes (if you're a fan of the amazing rock rap band by the name of Grand Buffet, the podcast is called "The Grungeman Speaketh" and the podcast are dated for like... 2005 or something, they're enjoyable). Modey Blues are probably the best rock band to come out of Pittsburgh, and even I would say "best anything" originally, but I'm earning a mild respect for Pittsburgh everyday when I listen to acts like Grand Buffet or Modey Lemon. Along with being a personal favorite of mine, they're also probably the most successful alternative band from Pittsburgh and have been developing a following quickly, having toured with Dinosaur Jr. in 2002 on their reunion tour. I don't have much recent knowledge of this band, but having the opportunity to listen to them for practically all of yesterday (might repeat this behavior today), I remembered how awesome the s/t is and how I needed to up it. Modey Lemon's self-titled is not the only good album by this band, but what I felt was the best introduction to them, comparisons that could be made... I guess I am most reminded of The White Stripes, although they are much more unbridled in spirit and slightly less bluesy.

Now, the influences listed on their myspace, are pretty dead on; and I find myself finding this more and more odd how essential myspace has been to the music world because without this myspace, this tiny page of information found through google search [google=internet god], a random, bumbling stranger would have no look into this wonderful wonderful band. This album sounds like Minutemen started making more songs that were like "Corona" but even more awesome, then listened to a load of Archie Bell and The Drells, and then hosted a bonfire party, where everyone got high and slowed down, then sped up, then slowed some more, then finally mellowed the hell out. It's a party where you wake up the next day and go: shit, that was an awesome party.
It's also pretty surprising to me that their album can be bought for a measly dollar on ebay. For shame!

I'm gonna be posting alongside Jon, and I know he's got the garagepunkrock thing going on, which I am also all about, but my goal here will be to overlap him in a way, because there are not many reccomendations I can make in that genre that Jon would not already have covered well. I promise everything I like is enjoyable (feel free to add me). I'll try to use mediafire everytime, but I run into uploading problems with them a lot. So begins the dawn of THE SUPER BLOG, and although we're not going to overtake and destroy Tokyo, we're still going to have quite a bit of fun while... drinking tea? surfing the interweb? listening to music on 'the iPod'? meh, do whatever. My goal will always be to post something you most likely have not heard yet. fair enough?

I know I started out this post with the exicitement and possibility of some great J-rock artists-- but i did not intend to globe-trot quite that far. Instead, here are three great European artists, all mainly pop rock:

PHOENIX- IT'S NEVER BEEN LIKE THAT

It's Never Been Like That

This is actually the most Phoenix has ever leaned toward 'pop rock', you might have heard tracks from their previous releases many a-time in movies "Run Run Run", or maybe "Too Young". A favorite of mine, "Love For Granted" from the album Alphabetical was played recently on HBO's Tell Me You Love Me, my new favorite television show, and whoever selects the songs for those episodes is a total genius. But this album was a big step up for a band usually associated with acts like Air and Daft Punk: "In fact, it takes until the fourth song, "Long Distance Call," for anything resembling a dancefloor beat to appear, and when it does it feels like an epilogue to the wonderful "If I Ever Feel Better" off the group's debut record. The band has definitely learned a thing or two through its evolution, placing more of an emphasis on guitar than before (Laurent Brancowitz and Christian Mazzalai sound as if they've been in the woodshed studying the chops of Johnny Marr and the twin-guitar attack of the Strokes' last few records)"- AMG

I could not find their recent performance at a new york city urban outfitters hosted by Nylon magazine (for free!!), but i did find this video, and it's somewhat funny.
don't get too harsh over the lip syncing-- theyre cute, alright? The backstory on this band is that they officially formed after a gig by The Libertines, where three of the chicks met their bassist. They have songs in both French and English, and sing without being snobbish in either regard. the album is definitely a 'grower'.

They Think They Are The Robocop Kraus

I agree with this description fully, so that's what im gonna go with: "The eclectic post-punk-inspired sound of the Robocop Kraus features Thomas Lang (vocals/guitar), Matthias Wendl (guitar), Tobias Helmlinger (bass), Markus Steckert (organ/keyboards), and Hans Christian Fuss (drums). The indie rock quintet is a cross between the arty, angular structure of Gang of Four and Echo & the Bunnymen and the new-millennium dance wave à la Bloc Party and Art Brut."- AMG
80s style pop punk dance funk to the nth degree. They have been a band for what seems a long time, but I first discovered the Robocop Kraus at a show where they opened for Art Brut and Gil Mantera's Party Dream, which I can honestly admit was the best show I have ever been to in my life. Weeks later I ran across the "You Don't Have to Shout" music video On Demand, and recalled the night Thomas Lang dashed into the crowd time and time again to dance with us (he dances exactly the same as he does in that music video), and when he hugged you (i had the pleasure of experiencing this also), you felt really good and happy not just about being there, or seeing that band, but happy about music and loving it. Before I get completely corny over it, grab the album.

And if you have any news of this band from 2007, other than the album they've been attempting to release for three years, call me!

a little early maybe, but these are my picks for best albums of the year

The Black Lips, people thought that their move to Vice would make them sellout and play hipster indie music, lucky for us they didnt. Though the sound isnt as trashie as their other albums it's still a decent album with some of their best songs.

From the first time I heard this album I knew it was the best of the year. King Khan is amazing! We all know his work with King Khan & BBQ Show, from the split album with the Dirtbombs to his early work with bands like Les Sexareenos and Spaceshits, but this time around I believe he surpassed them all. Well KK & BBQ are pretty damn good, but this if fucken amazing.

Destroy-Oh-Boy! is the kind of full-on flamethrower album that could make the most jaded cynic believe once again in the curative powers of punk rock. On this set, the New Bomb Turks combine 1950s and 1960s roots rock at it's rawest, '70s punk at it's snottiest, and '80s hardcore at it's most intense. Then they filter out what's lame, put the good stuff together, and send it down the track at 150 miles per hour. The results are wild, frantic, and thoroughly enjoyable; Jim Weber's fuzzy guitar communicates nearly as much through the power of downstroke as Johnny Ramone himself, bassist Matt Reber, and drummer Bill Randt push the horsepower into the red with a fury that is a wonder to behold, and Eric Davidson proves he's one of the great frontmen of 90s punk: smart, funny, wise-ass when he wants to be, and possessing a genuine sense of purpose. From the moment they crash into "Born Toulouse-Lautrec," the New Bomb Turks grab your ears and won't let go, and you won't mind a bit. The New Bomb Turks' debut album, Destroy-Oh-Boy!, made clear they were the Midwest's great new hope for old-school punk rock, and on their follow-up, Information Highway Revisited, they didn't change their tune much — they just got better at it. Recorded on a lavish four-day schedule, Information Highway Revisited sounds marginally more polished than Destroy-Oh-Boy!, but it's more a matter of cleaner engineering than any attempt to impose a slick production on this band; the higher-quality audio allows one to hear more of the band's nooks and crannies, and it turns out they're worth hearing, especially in Jim Weber's guitar and Eric Davidson's vocals. The songs show the Turks can pack a lot of variety into their supercharged three-chord ravers, with undercurrents of Rolling Stones-style R&B and Sonics-esque garage thunder lurking clearly beneath the surface.-amg

It may not be deathless, but 1984's Big Lizard in My Backyard is that rarest of beasts a collection of rock & roll silliness that outlives one playing. That mid-'80s favorite "Bitchin' Camaro" already demonstrated that ability plenty of times over. Portraying two guys yammering about Doors cover bands and "going down to the shore" before finally getting to the main point — the way-cool car of the title — it somehow finds the lost gap between pseudo-jazz grooves and punky snottiness. As left field a fluke hit single as it gets, its mix of bad taste, rock-star mockery and stoner humor still works well. As a whole, the album shows that the Milkmen know their rock & roll history, whether tackling serious issues with sarcasm or just aiming for straight-up silliness - amg

A step up from the good but not great Eat Your Paisley (2nd album), Bucky Fellini begins with a parody of the bandmember introductions from Sweet's "Ballroom Blitz" and raises another fun and funny stink. The most entertaining and ridiculous thing the band ever did takes deserved center stage — "Instant Club Hit (You'll Dance to Anything)." Consisting of drum machine fills, intentionally basic basslines and Rodney Anonymous' instantly recognizable sneer, it's a hilarious, all-too-knowing rip on '80s new wave / dance culture. With lines like "Oh, baby, look at you, don't you look like Siouxsie Sioux" and "'I met Andy Warhol at a really chic party/Blow it out your hair, dude, cuz you work at Hardee's!" it's hilarity personified (and bizarrely enough won them an appearance on an MTV dance show, where they encouraged a bout of stage diving). Nothing equals that song's sublime satire, but the Milkmen still stir things up with a touch more fire and sass than before. - amg

Tube City!: The Best of The Trashmen adds their Garrett singles to their lone 1964 album Surfin' Bird. That classic single is here in all of its raw, unfettered glory, and while it does tend to overshadow the rest of the Trashmen's output, the collection shows that their other work was also strong. Their covers of "Miserlou," "It's So Easy," and "Money (That's What I Want)" reflect the band's roots, and aren't overly respectful of the original versions, while "My Woodie" and "Kuk" are respectable surf-pop songs. The Trashmen's instrumentals also fare well, particularly "Tube City" itself , the flamenco-surf of "Malaguena," and "Bird Dance," a silly, tiki-bird infested bid to follow up the success of "Surfin' Bird." "Bird Dance Beat" follows suit, but songs like "Bad News," "Whoa! Dad," and "Real Live Doll" have as much energy, but a little more originality. While it's not as complete as the four-disc box Bird Call!: The Twin City Stomp of the Trashmen, Tube City!: The Best of The Trashmen is still the definitive look at the first part of their career. - amg

On their striking full-length debut, What's the Time Mr. Wolf?, the band moves from revved-up arty garage rock to soul and jazz-tinged balladry — sometimes during the course of one song — like it's on rails.
